It’s said that health is the first muse and sleep is the condition to produce it. Sounds poetic? You feel you have been transposed to a literature class. Even if you have, it won`t hurt you. After all it’s the lack of art and appreciation of art that is making man mechanical. Both dream and imagination have packed their bags and gone to far-flung lands with an upsetting promise of no- return. This will hurt. In the wake of coping with stress, anxiety and physiological and psychological problems man has lost his peace of mind. Resting and sleeping is no more serene and relaxing. Dear brain is working overtime. The outcome is more appalling than meekly guessed.

Even a drop of a glass will wake him up and if phone rings he says his sleep has gone to doldrums for the day. He blames it on age. I don`t refute that like a good granddaughter because I know that age has its impact on many things and sleep features in its hit list. But there are cases when age doesn’t play its dusty little tricks. There are many young and middle-aged individuals who just lie down hours after hours with eyes wide open staring the wall and the roof. There is another lot who will sleep away to glory the moment they fall on bed. People who don`t get a solid seven to eight hours of sleep at the night are found dozing off the entire day. If you happen to have such colleagues or friends or relatives then be prepared to face their mood- swings, frustration, depression and cranky outbursts without any rhyme or reason. Children are the worst sufferers. If they are up till two or three in the morning they feel tired, sleepy in the classroom and the concentration power is hit hard.
It is a pitiful situation for all those who simply yearn for good sleep at the end of a tiring day. Sleep- wake overgang (transition) requires professional medication and guidance. People are under the wrong impression that the transition related to sleep is normal and switching to on- off sleep is not an ailing condition. But it indeed is a health- setback.
