Omeprazole capsules and tablets, particularly Omeprazole 20 mg and 40 mg, have been widely recommended and prescribed by doctors worldwide. The fact that it has always been an effective treatment against paptic ulcers, heartburn (GERD) and acid reflux for years - makes it one of the most popular medications sold all over pharmacies available online and offline.  Uses of Omeprazole:  Patients who are suffering from gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or peptic ulcers are prescribed by doctors with Omeprazole. Gastroesophageal reflux disease is a medical condition having backflow of gastric acid towards the esophagus - this causes damage to the tissues of the esophagus. To allow healing and prevent further damage, Omeprazole is prescribed to inhibit the production of acid in the stomach. Patients who are diagnosed with peptic ulcers are also prescribed with Omeprazole to regulate the amount of acid produced in the stomach aiding in the elimination of H.Pylori bacteria infections. It is usually used along with antibiotics recommended by the doctor.  Administration of Omeprazole Capsules:  Omeprazole capsules are usually sold as delayed release capsules. This is to ensure that the enteric coated granules are protected by the strong gastric acids in the stomach while it travels to the intestine for its proper absorption. The usual prescribed dose is Omeprazole 20 mg or 40 mg - to be taken at least an hour before meals. It is recommended that the medication be taken on the same time everyday for 14 days, afterwhich, the doctor may observe for any changes and improvements on the symptoms. In some cases, Omeprazole may be prescribed again by the doctor usually after 4 months.  Important notes about Omeprazole: Omeprazole medication should not be mistaken to be used as “immediate” relief. The patient will only feel the effectiveness of the medication up to 4 days for Omeprazole 20 mg or 40 mg capsules. In most cases, the symptoms for acid related problems usually decrease or lessen in the span of 4 months. After 4 months, if the symptoms still do not improve – then the doctor may prescribe Omeprazole again for another 14 days. Do not attempt to stop the medication unless the doctor tells you, and always follow the exact instructions indicated by your doctor.    Elizabeth Janssen is a retired health care practitioner for 4 years.
