Whenever I read the story of sleeping beauty I get envious. Even Macbeth expressed his desire for sleep,
Sleep that knits up the raveled sleeve of care
The death of each day's life, sore labor’s bath
Balm of hurt minds, great nature's second course,
Chief nourisher in life's feast.
~William Shakespeare, Macbeth
There are several problems which affect our normal sleep cycles. slaapproblemen (sleeping problem) can range from falling asleep at odd times, erratic sleep cycles, to waking up in the middle of a deep slumber and not being able to fall asleep again. These problems are mainly caused by stress, anxiety and tension. When situations worsen we try to resolve to artificial sleep inducing methods which do nothing more than to aggravate the problem.
I myself was a sufferer and I found that there are certain factors which affect and sometimes, luckily, reset the natural sleep cycle. The first thing is obviously your state of mind. Stress and worry are major role players that interfere with sleep overgang (transition) states. You need to let go of stress and feel as relaxed as possible to switch back to a normal and healthy ‘sleep mode’! Secondly, you must always be mindful of your daytime activities and be mindful that they are full of energy and health oriented—like waking up early, getting ample sunshine, consuming healthy foods and exercising adequately. These help promote an enhanced sleep pattern.
Some people face a problem when going into the nighttime transition, i.e., the state between alertness to sleepiness. Be faithful to a regular sleep routine and this shouldn’t be a problem. Always dim the lights when going to sleep—it helps. Also ensure that you have the right environment for a good night’s sleep—it should be cool, relaxing, comfortable, well ventilated, noise-free and darkened.
You may also try your hand at some mental exercises to help soothe the restless brain like imagining some calming scenes like a beach, a waterfall, a lake or the sky. This will help you calm down.
